What is a prosthetic?

Dentures are artificial teeth used to replace teeth lost for various reasons. They are used to correct tooth loss caused by tooth decay, fracture or loss of teeth. Dentures are usually in two basic categories: partial or complete dentures.

1. Partial Prosthesis

Partial dentures are used when only a few teeth are missing. This type of prosthesis completes the tooth loss by relying on a structure that is placed between the natural teeth. This provides an aesthetic appearance and also supports chewing function.

2. Full Prosthesis

Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing. They consist of a plate that fits over the upper or lower jaw and mimic the function of natural teeth, helping the patient to carry out daily activities.

What is Prosthetic Dental Treatment?

Prosthodontic treatment involves a series of methods and procedures determined by a specialist physician specifically for the patient’s condition. This treatment plan is customized according to the degree of tooth loss, oral structure and general health of the patient. The physician creates a plan that best meets the patient’s needs by selecting from a range of methods.

Prosthodontic Treatment Options: Ways to Restore Aesthetics and Function

Fixed Prostheses

Inlay and onlay restorations or crown restorations can be applied in cases that cannot be restored with filling material and do not have sufficient tooth tissue support. Bridge prostheses, which are used as support on both sides of the gaps, are called fixed prostheses.

Zirconium Restorations

Zirconium restorations are highly biocompatible, durable and aesthetic prosthetic options. Zirconium restorations, which are used in both implant and fixed prostheses, are becoming more and more common day by day.

Laminate Restorations

Laminated restorations are used to treat physical defects in teeth such as color, form, shape and size. This form of aesthetic restoration, created by low-level abrasion of leaf-shaped porcelain, offers an appearance that matches the natural tooth color.

Removable Prostheses

When adequate support cannot be provided for fixed prosthesis applications, removable prostheses made with the support of tissues and teeth can be worn and removed when desired. In partial removable dentures, dentures with sensitive retainers may be preferred to eliminate aesthetic concerns.

Implant Prostheses

  • Implant Fixed Prostheses

These are prostheses supported by one or more implants and fixed by screwing or bonding techniques. These prostheses are usually used when several teeth are missing and can be applied without damaging the surrounding teeth. Ceramic, metal or zirconium are among the filling materials for fixed prosthesis on implants.

  • Implant Removable Prostheses

These prostheses, which are positioned in the jawbone when all teeth are missing, are usually supported by 2, 3 or 4 implants. Removable dentures can be supported by both tissues and implants, thus preventing them from coming out.

The Result of Prosthodontic Treatment

When prosthodontic treatment is completed, the patient’s natural tooth appearance is restored. Thanks to this treatment, lost functions, aesthetics and phonation are regained. In addition, the patient’s self-confidence increases and they have a comfortable oral function in their daily life.
